2006 Heartbreak Spurs On Defoe

JERMAIN DEFOE has vowed to make up for the disappointment of missing out on the 2006 World Cup finals by making every second count with England in the battle to be part of the squad heading to South Africa next summer. Defoe was "shocked" when he was overlooked by Sven-Goran Eriksson in favour of rookie Theo Walcott.

No Needle, Says Skipper

Cricket PAUL Collingwood is not expecting any hard feelings between England and South Africa when they resume their international battle at the Wanderers today. Graeme Smith and Andrew Strauss, who does not play in the shortest form of the game and is therefore not involved in the two Twenty20 clashes, had a well-documented confrontation out in the middle when the two sides last met during the Champions Trophy in September.

Cudicini in Bike Smash

Football TOTTENHAM suffered a double blow after goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini fractured his wrists and injured his pelvis in a serious road accident and striker Roman Pavlyuchenko announced he wants to quit the club. Cudicini, 36, was admitted to hospital after his BMW superbike collided with a Ford Fiesta on Forest Road, Walthamstow, east London, at 10.30am yesterday.

MANCHESTER United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will serve a touchline ban for his side's matches at home to Everton and away at Portsmouth after being punished for his comments about referee Alan Wiley. The Scot's punishment - which also includes a further two-match ban suspended until the end of the 2010/11 season and a Pounds 20,000 fine - was imposed after he claimed the official was "just wasn't fit enough" to take charge of United's 2-2 draw with Sunderland last month.

A MAN was found "covered in blood" at his home after he was allegedly stabbed 11 times by a love rival, a jury was told. Phillip Richmond described how he discovered Anthony Dawidowksi, 53, kneeling in the hallway of his bungalow in Saxon Street, off Rasen Lane.

WILDLIFE experts in Lincolnshire have welcomed a new law that will result in the creation of a footpath running the length of the county's coast. The Marine and Coastal Access Bill has received Royal Assent and will now become an act and law.

A VIOLENT armed robber has absconded from a Lincolnshire prison and is now on the run. Andrew Philip Deen, 43, had been serving a life sentence for armed robbery but also has previous convictions for rape and can be extremely violent.
