Shop That Rose From Ashes Up for Award ; Customers Nominate Village Store Struck by Fire for Honour
A VILLAGE store almost destroyed by fire just months ago is now in with a chance of being crowned the top shop in the UK. Customers of Crescent Stores in Leasingham, near Sleaford, have voted their local shop one of the best in the country as part of the 13th annual Robert Wiseman Dairies Neighbourhood Shop Of The Year competition.
A RACEHORSE trainer is to scale a mountain to raise money for injured thoroughbreds. Steve Gollings, of Scamblesby, near Market Rasen, will be making his attempt on the peak of Blencathra in Cumbria.
Inquest Hears Driver Was Too Close to Cyclist
A CYCLIST was killed after a car driver failed to leave enough room while overtaking, an inquest heard. Carl Marriott, of Leasingham, near Sleaford, suffered fatal chest injuries after he was knocked off his bike while travelling home from work.
SARAH Cheng and Clare Lanes met on the university's BA conservation and restoration programme and are now planning to become business partners. Ms Cheng, 37, who lives with her family in Nettleham, near Lincoln, said: "The business will focus on the conservation and restoration of ceramic and decorative arts. It was an idea that developed while Clare and I studied together."

A CITY centre house will be converted into flats if plans are given the council's seal of approval. The house in Monks Road will be converted into three flats if officials approve blueprints.
Burglars Steal Ipods, Mobiles and Laptops ; in Brief
BURGLARS stole electrical equipment from a home in Lincoln. Four laptops, a TV, two mobile phones and four iPods were stolen from the property in Glenarm Crescent near Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln, overnight between Monday and Tuesday.

Jail Nurse 'Smuggled Pills in for Inmates'
A NURSE smuggled vitamins, soap and even baby wipes into a prison to hand out to inmates, a hearing was told. Sharon Walker, 40, arranged for the parcels to be addressed to her so they would not be searched by security, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) heard. The breach was discovered after colleagues claimed she was distributing packages at HMP North Sea Camp in Freiston, Lincolnshire.
A GOVERNMENT minister will address recession-hit county business owners from all over Lincolnshire at a meeting today. Phil Hope, Minister for the East Midlands, will be at Grantham Arts Centre to speak to traders about their experience during the credit crunch.

THE battle for the South Lincolnshire & Border League championship intensified after Boston and Billingborough scored convincing victories over Woodhall Spa 2nds and Grantham respectively. Boston won by 102 runs after Jonathan Cheer's innings of 80 helped them to 256 for nine while Woodhall's Ben Percival made 83.
Bimson Backs Brabin ; Former Cambridge Boss Would Be 'Perfect'
STUART BIMSON has given a glowing endorsement of Gary Brabin's managerial ability by insisting he is the "perfect man" to revive Lincoln City's fortunes. The former Cambridge boss (pictured right) became the first candidate to be interviewed for the job yesterday as the club stepped up their search for a successor to Peter Jackson.

VILLAGERS want to build a new community centre after branding current facilities "unacceptable". An array of groups have been working for the past six months in an attempt to create a new centre in the village of Navenby, near Waddington.
DRIVERS are being urged to check their tyres as part of a campaign to highlight the dangers of worn rubber. The HiQ fast fit centre in Wragby Road, Lincoln, is launching the initiative - and warning about the Pounds 2,500 fine and penalty points they face if stopped by police.

A PUB will be serving six wines that each have a connection with the year 1979 during a 20-day wine festival. Pub operator JD Wetherspoon was founded that year and the festival at The Packhorse Inn in Northgate, Sleaford, is being held to commemorate its 30-year anniversary.

FORTY-NINE jobs have been created at a supermarket, which was due to open today. Sainsbury's acquired a building in Spilsby from Somerfield earlier this year and 49 new jobs have been created.
