Prepare the garage door by rubbing it down with coarse sandpaper or a wire brush, ensuring you remove any unstable paint. Use a sugar- soap solution to clean off the sanding dust and any grease and dirt, then wash the door down with clean water. Ensure it's completely dry before painting it. When painting outside, try to make sure the temperature's between 8C and 25C, otherwise you may have problems getting a good finish (painting in the rain is obviously a no-no). Don't forget to cover the ground under the door, and the surrounding area, with dust sheets, old curtains, or newspaper. Start by opening the door and painting the edges that can't be seen when it's shut.
