In 1042, when Lincoln's Gild of Freeman was formed, feudal laws meant that many citizens led very restricted lives.

The feudal laws, enacted by William the Conqueror, meant that ordinary people were regarded as the property of their lords and did not have the right to move, get another job or even earn money without permission.
