Hours after Tuesday's horrific events at RAF Scampton, Flt Lt Cunningham's cherry red Hawk T1 jet remained on the runway.
Teams of engineers, pilots, ambulance crews and investigators littered the airfield. They would all have had the same questions: What happened inside the jet in those final seconds? Why did the ejector seat go off ? Why, as is being suggested, did his parachute not open? How could this have been avoided? How could tragedy have struck this close-knit team for the second time in less than three months? What now for the Reds? Answers won't come quickly.
