During the 1990s BMW shared an engine/chassis platform with Aprilia, and even the BMW- badged machines were built in Aprilia's Noale factory near Venice. Production of the German versions switched to Berlin in 2000, then in 2007 the faithful single-cylinder, 652cc motor was modified extensively for its role in powering the G-series of trail and off- road bikes.

The motor is still with us this year, and it now appears in the new G650GS, a lightweight, low-cost version of BMW's adventure bike range.
