Was the Perfect Candidate

Summary

QIt was well documented that you had whittled the shortlist down to four candidates, but what was the deciding factor in giving David Holdsworth the job? AHaving sat down with all four of the interviewees, I was really impressed by all of them and they all brought different skills to the table. But David's enthusiasm became quickly apparent and he came across very impressively. He thought it would be a tremendous honour to manage Lincoln City and that really shone through to the four-man selection committee.

He showed us that he possesses some great contacts which is so important especially when it comes to signing players at this level. He is an excellent communicator and someone who the fans will be able to relate to, because the last two managers did not fare too well on that side. David is a disciplinarian and someone who will be incredibly hard on the training ground to get the best out of the players. Combine that with his desperation to resurrect his managerial career and I think we have the manager who has the tools to do exceptionally well. Ultimately, when we set out on this journey, we laid down the criteria that we wanted and David ticked the boxes in the fact he has good knowledge of this level. He knows the players, he knows the teams, and he does not live very far away which was also important. We did not want another manager who was based too far from the football club. Overall, we were very happy with how smoothly the operation went. 'David will get the best out of the players' QWhen you sat down with David to discuss the role, what did you tell him your expectations were for this season? AWe made it clear to him that we had seen little or no progression at this football club in the last three seasons and we wanted that to change. We said we wanted somebody who could take the club forward and progression was the important word we used.

All we want is the club moving forwards. QGiven the fact that the contract is only until the end of the season, how can the club safeguard itself from other clubs swooping for him if he is a success? Can you put measures in place that gives ...
